Finally I will also give my insight about the best things to do, where to eat, drink and party.

After all, I have visited Thailand numerous times over the past few years and actually lived for months between Koh Samui and the nearby Koh Phangan. So what better way than being filled in from a quasi-local?

When to visit Koh Samui

It is the most common question that first time visitors to Koh Samui have. Personally I would say anytime is good to visit Koh Samui. But then again to properly answer this question you first need to figure out what are your priorities. Is it good weather, less tourists, cheaper prices? Each of these options is possible, but requires a few compromises.

The chart shows temperatures and rainfall in each month of the year in Koh Samui

Mid December to end of February: This is the best time if you’re after nice sunny days with the least chance of rain, comfortable temperatures of around 25℃ and favorable sea conditions. The drawback is that this is also peak season. Expect busier beaches and attractions. Soaring hotel prices can also be expected for last minute bookings. So make sure to book in advance for more options and better deals. Also consider booking any transport if you know your travel dates.

August to Mid December: This is when rainy days start to become more frequent. The weather still remains warm and you can expect less tourists. This is a good time to snatch up some really good hotel deals. Financially it is the best time to visit Koh Samui. September, October and November are the rainy season. But that doesn’t mean it rains non stop. In fact, on most days the rain comes in burst in the afternoon usually lasting around 1 or 2 hours.

How to get to Koh Samui

There are a few ways to get to Koh Samui including by bus or train followed by a ferry or by air. How you get there will depend on where you are traveling from. For a budget-friendly option, take a bus and ferry combo from Khao San Road. The journey takes between 10 to 12 hours in total but only costs $50 making it the cheapest option. These routes can be found on the 12Go platform.

For a unique Thai experience, try the sleeper train to Surat Thani. It offers bunk beds with fresh seats, a restaurant, and toilets. Air conditioned carriages are always in demand so make sure to book in advance.

Koh Samui's sunset

1. Take a boat to Ang Thong National Marine Park

Around 40 islands just off the coast of Koh Samui form the Mu Koh Ang Thong National Marine Park. It’s like a cluster of islands and rock formation jutting our of the water and all covered in lush jungle. It is the number 1 activity listed on this Koh Samui travel guide because you should have it high on your list.

You must take a boat to get there and when you arrived you will be blown away by the beauty of this place. There’s pretty beaches and coves and make sure to have your snorkel mask ready because beneath the surface is just as magical with colorful marine life and schools of fish. However, if you’re on a budget this will be the most expensive option but there are more affordable →join in tours on offer which are still very good.

Even though Koh Samui is a large island the beaches are primarily concentrated in the north eastern portion of the island. The main beaches on the island is Chaweng and the surrounding area is where most tourists stay. The rest of the beaches are further north towards Bo-Phut or to the south towards Lamai.

Here are the best beaches in Koh Samui:

Chaweng Beach: It’s the longest and most popular beach in Koh Samui. With soft sand spilling into shallow clear waters. The beach extends onto Chaweng Noi, which is arguably nicer and much less crowded.

Lamai Beach: Another popular beach also on the east coast of Koh Samui is Lamai. It’s a nice beach with thicker sand grains and the bay quickly slopes down into the water so it may be deep Water visibility here is usually low.

Bo Phut: This is the beach near the fisherman’s village. There are lots of restaurants and cafes along the pedestrianized beach road.

Coral Cove: Besides being a beautiful beach with rock formations cropping out of the clear water, coral cove also offers some good snorkeling just meters a way from the bay.

Silver beach: This bay often goes unnoticed due to its location. It’s a small beach in a stunning landscape with small outcrops covered in lush greenery on either side.

Choeng Mon Beach: This nice neighborhood is home to an equally gorgeous beach. The nice bay wraps around opening up onto a small cove.

Thongson beach: This is one of the secluded beaches in Koh Samui located on the north eastern tip of a peninsula. A winding road near Melati beach resort leads to this tropical paradise and behind an outcrop of rocks is naturism beach (a nudist beach).

3. Visit the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

The Big Buddha in Koh Samui is one of the island’s most iconic. Standing 12 meters and towering above a temple complex set amidst a peaceful lake filled with fish. Beyond the rock formation, the views and breathtaking and there is also a nice patch of beach.

Koh Nang Yuan is a small island just off the coast of Koh Tao. It’s made up of 2 separate hills connected by a sand strip. You can even hike up the hills for an incredible viewpoint of the underlying beach. The water around this little is the clearest I have seen. Abundant marine life and corals are littered on the seabed. You will need a boat to get there which you can →book online online and compare prices and read guest reviews. Most of the boat operators will also offer mask and snorkel.

9. Eat, Drink and Relax at Beryl Bar

The cascades are best visited after the rainy season for the most dramatic flow and the surrounding landscapes will also be at their fullest.
