What is the purpose of the trip?

Is it a family vacation with children, or are you traveling as a couple, is it a group trip or maybe you are a solo traveler.

Knowing the purpose of your trip helps in choosing the right destination.

For example, if traveling in a group, choose a destination offering a combination of things to do. That way you are sure that everyone finds something that interests them.

What is your budget?

Figuring out how much you can spend will help determine which destinations fit within your budget

If all you know is that you want to travel somewhere but don’t actually know what you want to do, there are many places on social media to find travel inspiration.

Do you have fixed dates?

You will need to choose your travel destination depending on when you can travel. Choose places with ideal weather conditions around your travel dates.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PERFECT HOLIDAY DESTINATION

CHOOSING HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS IN 2021

With the current situation, planning a trip will need some more research compared to pre-Covid 19 trip planning.

We know this from a personal experience where we paid over $400 in visa fees and agent fees for a trip in Indonesia. Only to find that the country implemented a tourist travel ban with no timeframe of how long it will last.

Our mistake was mainly not following what was going on in Indonesia during the time we were planning our trip or before paying for the Visas. (we actually received our visas but were of no use due to the restrictions)

Therefore, due to these situations, it is essentials to follow news related to any destinations you have in mind. And if the situation is getting worse, you may need to find an alternative for that particular destination.

As things stand right now, FLEXIBILITY is probably one of the best solutions if you are determined to travel any time soon. Being flexible will allow you to change plans and choose an alternative destination if your planned trip and destination implement travel restrictions.

With many travel insurance policies covering COVID-19 related health problems, it is now important more than ever to get yourself covered. And it is a misconception that travel insurance has to be expensive.

MAKE A LIST OF ALL YOUR IDEAS

To put together a plan that will finally lead to you picking out the best travel destination, start off by listing all of your interests and ideas.

The list of things to do while on vacation is broad. However, each person has their own personal interests when on holiday.

By listing all your top choices and things to do while on vacation, you can easily start to break down the best travel destinations for you.

For example, if your type of trip should include historical sites or cultural activities, probably old European cities like Rome or Athens are a good starting point.

LOOK FOR INSPIRATION

If you are planning your first overseas trip and don’t exactly know what sort of holiday you want, search for inspiration on social media platforms. This is definitely a great way to get travel inspiration.

Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest, are the best social media platforms to get inspired.

Instagram

Instagram probably has the largest concentration of travel-related content. And it offers visualization for the most amazing travel destinations in the world.

If you don’t follow any travel-related accounts, you can easily find some of the best by typing in #travel in the search box. This will bring up a list of travel-related accounts and you can follow any you love.

Alternatively, if you already have an idea of the area you will be traveling to (for example continent or large island nations like the Philippines or Indonesia) you can type in: #thephilippines, #indonesia or even #middleeast, #southeastasia, or whatever place you have in mind.

YouTube

Most travel-related searches are on Google, and YouTube is the second largest place where people search for something.

If you are looking for inspiration, YouTube has lots of travel-related content. Similar to Instagram, on YouTube, you will get a visualization of destinations around the world.

There are listicles for any destination which is great to get an idea of what to expect in a particular place.

Pinterest

Once you have the right amount of inspiration from Instagram and YouTube, you can put down all of your ideas on Pinterest.

FIGURE OUT YOUR BUDGET

So you have a list of all the things you want to do while on vacation. And you also have a few destinations where you can find those particular interests for your trip.

To break down the list (and many other reasons *) you will need to set a budget.

Since not every destination will cost the same, knowing how much you want to spend on your vacation will help you determine which places fit within the budget and skip places that don’t.

*Travellers often end up spending more than they had intended. If you set a budget in advance you can plan out how much you want to spend on accommodation, food, and activities.

Flights are one of the biggest expenses when planning a holiday and it can be challenging to find cheap flights by individually looking for deals on airline websites. Kiwi.com is a website and mobile App that does all the work for you and you can find the best flight deals in just a few minutes.

WHEN WILL YOU GO ON HOLIDAY

Although there are a few travel destinations that are good all year round, most places have an ideal climate during certain parts of the year.

Therefore, to narrow down your list of potential destinations, look for destinations that will have ideal weather conditions during the time you want to travel.

Unless all the destinations on your list are in the same region or continent, you could probably eliminate those that won’t have ideal weather conditions.

PEAK SEASON

Also, keep in mind peak season months. This is true if you want to avoid crowds, especially in popular destinations.

A great option to avoid crowds is to travel during the shoulder months. Shoulder months are the months after and before peak season and are usually the months before and after the summer and Christmas holidays.

These months get fewer tourists simply because almost everyone has their vacation days during the same time of year. And also months, when children are back to school, are usually quieter.

LIST YOUR TOP DESTINATIONS

By now the list you started off with should have broken down into just a handful of destinations.

Although each destination that is currently on your list can potentially be a good place for your next holiday, one of those places probably offers at least one unique activity or experience.

Do some research on each destination and find something that interests you more than what the other places offer. This can be anything from unique places to visit or tourist spots, maybe more accommodation options, be more budget-friendly or even be easier to get around.

PIECE TOGETHER YOUR HOLIDAY

Once you have chosen your travel destination you can start piecing together a holiday plan and itinerary.

Once you’ve gone through all the steps on putting together the perfect travel plan, use Google Maps trip planner to get a visualization of your entire trip.

And if your destination offers lots of interesting spots, you can pick out a day for a day tour. This is a great way to see a few of your destination’s highlights in a single day.

However, keep in mind that popular tours, activities, and entrance tickets in any destination often start selling out in advance.

If you want to reserve a spot for a particular tour or purchase an entrance ticket for an activity, it is best to pre-book online.

Pre-booking a tour or entrance ticket ensures that you reserve your spot and actually visit the places you intended to go instead of being surprised to find everything is sold out.

Pre-book your tour or purchase entrance tickets in advance. By doing this, you are sure to have your spot reserved and visit that place you love!

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP

Have you ever noticed that you always over-pack? Many people do this and haul around loads of luggage with even more travel items and outfits that probably they won’t use. If you can relate to this or if you simply want to travel lighter, there are a few principles to follow.

Packing lighter means to move around easily and also may save money on the high airline fees for additional luggage.

And that brings us to the conclusion. With this information choosing a destination for your upcoming trip will be much more simplified.
